🌟 Nursery Newsletter – Week 8
What a lovely week we have had in Nursery!
The children have continued to learn, explore and develop their understanding of the world around them through a range of fun and engaging activities. This week, we have been discovering the four seasons, developing our mathematical language by comparing sizes and exploring positions, and strengthening our fine motor skills through mark-making and sensory activities. Here is a little look at what we have been learning!
• Understanding the World (UTW) – Exploring the Four Seasons: This week, we have been introducing the children to the four seasons through pictures, books and discussions. We have been encouraging the children to talk about what they notice in each season, including sunshine, rain, flowers, falling leaves and snow. These experiences help the children develop their understanding of seasonal changes and the natural world around them.
How you can support at home: Talk to your child about the weather and the changes they notice outdoors. Look at pictures of the four seasons together and discuss what they might see, such as flowers in spring, sunshine in summer, colourful leaves in autumn and snow in winter.

• Mathematics – Comparing Sizes and Weights: In Maths, we have been exploring objects of different sizes and weights, encouraging the children to compare them using gestures and mathematical language such as “bigger”, “little” and “smaller”. These activities help the children develop their early mathematical understanding and confidence when describing and comparing objects.
How you can support at home: Encourage your child to compare everyday objects around the house. You could compare large and small toys, look at different-sized books or explore which items feel heavier or lighter. Use words such as “bigger”, “smaller”, “heavier” and “lighter” during everyday activities.

• Mathematics – Exploring Routes and Locations: We have also been developing the children's understanding of position and space by discussing routes and where objects are located. The children have been introduced to positional language such as “in front of” and “behind”, helping them describe where things are and understand their position in relation to other objects.
How you can support at home: Play simple games with your child using their favourite toys. Ask them to place a teddy in front of a chair or hide a toy behind a cushion. You can also use positional language when walking together or tidying away toys.

• Physical Development – Fine Motor Skills and Exploring Textures: This week, we have been supporting the children's fine motor development through activities involving different textures and mark-making experiences. The children have been encouraged to explore a variety of materials while practising holding pens and pencils with a comfortable grip and increasing control. We are also encouraging them to develop their hand strength, coordination and begin to show a preference for a dominant hand. These skills help to build the foundations needed for future writing.
How you can support at home: Provide opportunities for your child to explore different textures, such as playdough, sand, water or soft fabrics. Encourage them to make marks using crayons, chunky pencils or paintbrushes, allowing them to practise using their hands and fingers while having fun.
